Application of MPO/MTP Optical Cable in Data Center


At present, MPO or MTP are commonly used in multi-core optical fiber connectors in the industry. MPO is the abbreviation of Multifiber Push-On/Pull-Off, which means multi-core push-pull self-locking optical fiber connector, invented by USconec. MTP is a brand of MPO connectors registered by USconec, which refers to the high performance MPO connectors it produces.


Compared with ordinary optical cables, the main characteristics of MPO/MTP optical cables are high density and pre-connection, and ultimately embodied in the MTP/MPO multi-core joint. At present, a MTP/MPO multi-core joint can meet the high density requirements of 12 cores, 24 cores and 72 cores. More importantly, MTP/MPO optical cable achieves multi-core pre-connection of single optical fiber through plant equipment and pipeline, replacing the complex operation of field end connection, which not only greatly reduces the installation time, but also greatly reduces the installation space of wiring system, and also reduces the impact of field construction and installation on performance and the probability of performance uncertainty.

In summary, the advantages of MPO/MTP cable in data center are as follows:

(1) Protecting the effectiveness and safety of investment. Although MPO/MTP cable has higher requirements for the integrator's early and actual field investigation ability, it can also fully protect the investor's right to control the project and to know about the use of products, and avoid the risk of material waste and project investment.

(2) Economically applicable. Generally speaking, MPO/MTP pre-connection mode does not increase additional costs.

(3) Easy to operate, easy to install, save installation time, plug and play;

(4) MPO/MTP pre-connected optical cables are fully tested in the factory, and there are no additional products in the installation process, so the field test operation is simple.

(5) Optical fiber links are fully protected, without fusion points and bare optical fibers exposed to the air, there will be no aging, joint fracture and other issues;

(6) Maintenance is convenient and safe. The mechanical performance of MPO/MTP pre-connected fiber optic branching device is excellent. Maintenance or operation process will not affect the normal use of fiber optics.

(7) It can be reinstalled and moved. The branch of MPO/MTP pre-connected optical cable can be quickly inserted and moved, and reinstalled as needed.

Although MPO/MTP optical cables bring many benefits in engineering implementation through end-to-end high-density integration and plug-and-play implementations, it is still necessary to measure whether they have the ability to support smooth network upgrade.


We know that a data center wiring system can not only use 5-10 years, compared with network equipment, the lifetime of the wiring system is much longer, so when planning the data center wiring system, we should consider the ability to upgrade and expand the network in the future. With the migration of data centers from 10G to 100G, the traditional LC port connection mode will not be able to meet the demand, while MPO/MTP is more flexible. 

Under the standard of IE802.3ba, MPO/MTP can achieve 100G in two ways: 

(1) in a 24-core MPO cable and connector, 10 cores are used to send signals, and 10 cores are used to receive signals. Thus, 10 10G parallel optical links constitute a 100G optical link; 

(2) in two 12-core MPO cables and connectors, 10 cores of one MPO cable are used to send signals, and the other 1 M MPO cable is used to send signals. The 10 cores of PO cable are used to receive signals. Similarly, 10 10G parallel optical links constitute a 100G optical link. 

Under the standard of IE802.3bm, 8-core MPO cable and its connector can also be used to realize parallel transmission of four 25G optical channels. In conclusion, MPO/MTP has good adaptability to network upgrade and expansion.
